No fewer than 100 school children (students and pupils) aspiring to become golfers will converge on the Ibadan Golf Club (IGC) on Saturday May 27 for a special event tagged “Junior Golf Picnic 2023” powered by the Ladies Section.
The event coming on the heels of the annual Children’s Day celebration will commence at 8:00 a.m. pari passu “golf lessons and playing” to terminate at 2:00 p. m.
Dorcas Oluwatunmise, the Lady Captain of IGC believes that the development was another way of inculcating the ethics and values of golf into the younger ones at primary and secondary schools, ostensibly for them to appreciate the game better going forward.
The Lady Captain commenting on the event affirmed, “This is a programme designed to teach the younger ones from primary and secondary schools in particular, lessons about golf; It’s theory and practical (playing); this is because it’s said that ‘teach a child the way to go, he/she will not depart from it in the long run.”
“The children need to know the rudiments of the game and imbibe the culture of it now and when they grow up, it will be an easy ride for them; at that point they can take an informed decision on the way to go,” she explained.
Golf coaches will be on ground to teach the children the right lessons of the game while the event lasts, just as there will also be some fanfare to entertain the children.
Against this backdrop, the Lady Captain appealed to parents to create the enabling opportunity for their children to be part of the event, noting that golf is a game for all irrespective of ones socioeconomic and political status.
At the end of the exercise, the Lady Captain reiterated that the children will have enough fun to spice up their Children’s Day celebration.
