Big Zulu is once again at the centre of hip hop conversation after his place in the genre was put under the spotlight during a recent podcast discussion.
The debate unfolded on an episode of Up To Speed Podcast, hosted by DJ Speedsta, where a simple but provocative question shifted the tone of the conversation. Guest Mswenko Franko asked, “Is Big Zulu a rapper?”
Speedsta responded without hesitation: “Yes, he is.”
The moment quickly opened up a wider discussion about how the Inkabi Nation leader is viewed within hip hop, particularly when it comes to conversations around top lyricists.
Questions were raised about why Big Zulu is often excluded from such lists, despite his success and strong presence in the industry.
Drawing from his personal experience, Speedsta reflected on witnessing Big Zulu’s early days at Back To The City, a platform known for spotlighting lyrical talent.
“I know Big Zulu from Back To The City, that other stage,” he shared.
“Then he made it, and then he also understood, like okay, sharp, yes, I can rap, but my purpose is bigger than rap.”
As the discussion unfolded, it became clear that Big Zulu’s evolution may be part of the reason behind the ongoing debate.
While he has proven his lyrical ability, his music has expanded to include elements of maskandi and a stronger cultural narrative, setting him apart from traditional rap expectations.
Speedsta also highlighted the intention behind that direction.
“Big Zulu is for his people,” he said. “So I think he tries his best to still remain a rapper and a hip hop artist, but still tries to bring in the rest of the Inkabi Nation. I could be wrong, but in terms of him being a rapper, 100%.”
