Award-winning rapper Gigi Lamayne has revealed that she is preparing a collaborative Hip Hop EP with fellow rapper Reason, also known as Sizwe Alakine.
The announcement was made during a recent episode of Gigiverse, where Gigi shared details about the upcoming project and explained the direction the two artists intend to take.
“Reason and I are going to be doing a joint EP. I’m really excited about that one and we’re gonna be rapping,” she said.
The rapper added that the project stems from conversations she and Reason have had about the current state of Hip Hop.
“We’ve realised that the industry could be in trouble. It’s time for Sizwe and I to step in,” she said.
Expanding on her comments, Gigi explained that she believes there is room for more storytelling and lyrical depth within the genre.
“I just feel like we need a little more substance. There’s not enough substance right now when it comes to the Hip Hop industry and that’s just my two cents. I get all the partying, but there’s hardly anyone telling a real story,” she said.
The announcement is significant given the musical paths both artists have explored in recent years. Although Gigi Lamayne built her reputation as one of South Africa’s leading lyricists, she has increasingly experimented with sounds outside traditional Hip Hop. Recent releases have seen her venture into genres such as 3-Step and Afro-house, highlighting her versatility as an artist.
Reason, meanwhile, has spent much of the past few years focusing on Amapiano under his Sizwe Alakine moniker. His transition from Hip Hop into the dance genre has produced several successful releases and established him as one of the most recognisable crossover artists in the country.
Despite their exploration of different sounds, both artists have consistently maintained their roots in rap music. The upcoming EP is expected to place that foundation at the forefront, with Gigi specifically emphasising that the project will focus on rapping.
The pair are no strangers to working together. Their most recent collaboration was the 2025 single Bestie, which brought the two artists together on a commercially released track and performance circuit. The song was released on Valentine’s Day and showcased the chemistry between the two musicians.
While no release date or tracklist has been announced, the joint EP is set to reunite two of South Africa’s most established rap voices on a project dedicated to Hip Hop, lyricism and storytelling.
