Leading home improvement retailer Leroy Merlin has officially unveiled its new Alberton store in Gauteng, marking another milestone in its South African expansion.

BusinessTech attended the retailer’s exclusive pre-opening evening on 31 March, which offered guests a first look at the completed store ahead of its public opening on 1 April.

“Tonight we are here to celebrate the opening of our latest store in South Africa,” said Leroy Merlin South Africa CEO Frank Dufourq.

“A store designed both for homeowners and for pros. The store where you can be inspired. The store where you can be supported by one of our 120 teammates, and the store where if you are a pro, you can buy in bulk, quickly and with the best prices.”

Dufourq explained that this new opening was a very meaningful milestone for the Leroy Merlin brand and its teams in South Africa.

This is because Leroy Merlin values every new location and sees it as an opportunity to help people improve their homes.

“Our vision is very simple. We want South Africans to make their homes the best places to live,” said Dufourq.

The event was also attended by Dora Mlambo, the MMC for Economic Development, who praised Leroy Merlin’s new Alberton store for its impact on local economic growth and job creation.

Rapid expansion: Cape Town 2027

This marks Leroy Merlin’s sixth store in South Africa – as the French company has rapidly expanded since its local launch in 2016.

All six current stores are in Gauteng, and the retailer has a seventh store currently in development in KwaZulu-Natal.

Dufourq also officially confirmed that Leroy Merlin will be opening its first store in Cape Town in 2027.

“I will tell you something, and you will be the first to hear it tonight – our first Cape Town store will open in 2027,” said Dufourq.

“By 2030, we plan to at least triple the number of stores, making us one of the major companies in the market.”
