Hawks Arrest Viljoen at OR TamboSerious Charges Expected in CourtArrest Comes After US DetentionPublic Interest Grows Around the CaseOld Property Case Returns to SpotlightWhat Happens Next?Legal Process Must Take Its Course

Peet Viljoen has landed in fresh legal trouble after the Hawks arrested him at OR Tambo International Airport on Tuesday, 16 June 2026.

The 57-year-old, who is widely known through his connection to The Real Housewives of Pretoria star Mel Viljoen, was taken into custody shortly after returning to South Africa from the United States.

His arrest has quickly attracted public attention because it comes only weeks after he and Mel made headlines in America over alleged grocery theft claims.

However, this latest case relates to a much older South African matter involving alleged fraud, theft, forgery and corruption linked to City of Johannesburg properties.

Hawks Arrest Viljoen at OR Tambo

According to police, members of the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation unit arrested Viljoen at OR Tambo International Airport.

The arrest followed an ongoing investigation into allegations connected to the unlawful sale of properties belonging to the Johannesburg Property Company.

The Johannesburg Property Company is wholly owned by the City of Johannesburg.

Police said the case dates back to May 2010, when several properties were allegedly sold to unsuspecting buyers.

Investigators claim the properties were transferred and sold, but the Johannesburg Property Company allegedly never received payment.

As a result, the company reportedly suffered major financial prejudice.

Serious Charges Expected in Court

Viljoen is expected to appear before the Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on Thursday, 18 June 2026.

Police said he faces allegations of fraud, theft, forgery, uttering and contravention of the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act.

The cases were first reported at Sandton and Boschkop police stations.

They were later referred to the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation unit for further investigation.

For now, the matter remains before the courts.

Therefore, the allegations must still be tested through the legal process.

Arrest Comes After US Detention

Viljoen’s arrest at OR Tambo came after his return from the United States. Earlier this year, he and his wife, Mel, were arrested in Florida over alleged shoplifting claims.

American authorities accused the couple of being involved in a grocery-related theft matter. Reports claimed the alleged incident involved goods worth thousands of dollars.

The couple later spent time in detention facilities in the United States. Mel returned to South Africa before her husband, while Viljoen’s return came later.

Soon after landing back in the country, South African authorities arrested him.

Public Interest Grows Around the Case

The case has drawn strong public interest because of the Viljoens’ reality TV profile.

Mel Viljoen became known to many South Africans through The Real Housewives of Pretoria. The couple also attracted attention through their luxury lifestyle and business ventures.

However, their public image has faced growing scrutiny over recent months.

The US arrest placed them back in the headlines. Now, Peet Viljoen’s arrest in South Africa has added another dramatic chapter.

Social media users have already started debating the case. Some reacted with shock. Others pointed to the older property matter and said they want to see how the court handles it.

Old Property Case Returns to Spotlight

The fraud case linked to Johannesburg Property Company properties is not new. According to police, investigators have been dealing with allegations dating back more than a decade.

The matter involves claims that properties owned by the municipal entity were unlawfully sold to buyers.

Those buyers were reportedly unaware of the alleged irregularities. Police also say the City-owned entity did not receive payment after the transactions.

That detail forms a key part of the Hawks’ investigation. The court process will now determine how the case moves forward and whether prosecutors can prove the allegations.

What Happens Next?

Viljoen’s first court appearance will likely provide more clarity. The court may deal with the charges, bail arrangements and the next steps in the case.

For now, the Hawks continue to handle the matter as a serious commercial crime investigation. The arrest also means Viljoen’s legal troubles now stretch across two countries.

In the United States, he and Mel faced allegations linked to retail theft. In South Africa, he now faces allegations linked to property fraud and corruption. Both matters have kept the couple under intense public scrutiny.

Legal Process Must Take Its Course

Although the story has already gone viral, the case still needs to move through the courts.

Viljoen has not been convicted in relation to these latest allegations. For that reason, the matter should be reported carefully and fairly.

The Hawks have confirmed the arrest and the nature of the allegations. However, the court will decide what happens next.

For now, Peet Viljoen remains at the centre of a high-profile legal drama that has gripped South Africans.

His court appearance is expected to attract major attention as the public waits to see how the long-running property case unfolds.
