Reality TV personality Melany Viljoen, best known for appearing on The Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip: South Africa, has reportedly been arrested in the United States along with her husband Petrus Viljoen over alleged retail theft.
The couple was taken into custody in Boca Raton on 10 March 2026, after police linked them to a series of grocery store thefts that allegedly took place over several months.
Arrest After Months-Long Investigation
Authorities say the arrest followed a lengthy investigation into suspected retail theft at a branch of Publix in Boca Raton.
According to police reports, investigators reviewed surveillance footage and store transaction records dating back to August 2025. The footage allegedly showed the couple visiting the store multiple times and leaving with unpaid items.
Investigators claim the alleged thefts occurred across more than 50 transactions, involving around 392 items that were either not scanned or were scanned using cheaper barcodes.
The total value of the goods reportedly exceeded $5,300 (around R87,000).
Items Allegedly Stolen
Police say the products taken from the supermarket were mostly groceries and beverages. Some of the items listed in reports include:
- La Marca Prosecco sparkling wine
- San Pellegrino sparkling mineral water
- Maison Perrier flavoured sparkling water
- Coca-Cola Zero
- Other grocery products and household items
Authorities believe the couple used a tactic known as “ticket switching,” where a cheaper barcode is scanned in place of a more expensive product.
Mel Viljoen’s Reported Statement
According to the arrest report, Mel Viljoen admitted to being the person seen in the surveillance footage. She reportedly told police she had been stealing because she was “in survival mode.”
Viljoen allegedly explained that she had been unable to work in the United States because she did not have a valid visa, which left her struggling financially.
Despite her claim that she acted alone, investigators believe the couple worked together during the alleged thefts.
Charges and Bail
Both Mel and Peet Viljoen have been charged with aggravated grand retail theft, a felony under Florida law involving goods valued above $3,000.
Following their arrest, the couple were booked into custody and later granted bond of $10,000 each (about R165,000).
The case remains under investigation and could potentially lead to further legal proceedings.
Controversy Before Leaving South Africa
The Viljoen couple were already controversial figures before relocating to the United States.
They previously owned the Tammy Taylor Nails South Africa franchise, which became the centre of multiple legal disputes after allegations surfaced that franchises had been sold despite questions around ownership of the brand.
Several fraud and theft cases linked to those allegations were reportedly opened in South Africa before the couple left the country.
Their appearance on reality television also brought significant public attention to their lifestyle and business activities.
Social Media Reaction
News of the arrest quickly spread across South African social media platforms, with many users expressing shock that a well-known reality TV personality had become involved in such a case.
Others pointed out the irony that the couple were previously associated with luxury lifestyles on television.
As the story continues to unfold, many are watching closely to see what happens next in the legal process.
