Sol Phenduka

South African radio personality Sol Phenduka has shared a frightening road experience after almost being involved in a car accident in his neighbourhood.

In a post on X, Phenduka explained that a traffic light near his home, which had been malfunctioning for more than six months, suddenly started working again.

Used to the light flashing for months, he said the change did not immediately register in his mind as he approached the intersection.

According to Phenduka, he instinctively drove as usual, only to realise at the last moment that the traffic light was now fully functional and showing a solid red light, not the familiar flashing signal.

“Today it worked… I saw it’s working but it didn’t register in my head that it’s actually working,” he wrote, adding that the realisation came as a “rude awakening.”

The incident sparked discussion among his followers, with many expressing relief that he was unharmed while also sharing views on how motorists should approach malfunctioning traffic lights.

Some pointed out that flashing red lights should always be treated as stop signs, while others noted how confusing intersections can become when drivers are accustomed to faulty signals suddenly changing.
