Actions commenced Thursday for the First Abakaliki Ladies Open Golf Championship with Caddies and Ladies – handicap 29-36 events.
The Caddies round teed off at 7:00 a.m., while the laddies round commenced at 11:30 a.m. amid scorching sun in the Ebonyi State State capital, Abakaliki.
At the end of the Caddies event, Chinecherem D grossed 70 to lead the pack; his closest rivals, Ebube N, grossed 75; Nwakpor C, was 78 and Okemini Collins was 79 to end the winners team.
For the women, Lilian Obike handicap 36, steal the show with a gross of 101 and Net of 85; she was followed closely by Ngizi Nwafor, handicap 36, who grossed 139 and Net 99 for the second spot.
Others are Juliet Nwokorie, handicap 36 with a gross of 141 and Net 105 to place third on the leaderboard, while Mabel Udode,. handicap 36 completed the number with 157 gross and 121 Net.
In all, over 150 golfers have converged on the capital of the salt of the nation for the history-making event as the main event tees off on Friday November 5.
Top Ladies Golf Association of Nigeria (LGAN) players on ground include Amina Wilfred of IBB Golf Club, Abuja; Love Okoho of Port; Blessing Obaje of David Mark Golf Club, Otukpo, Benue State as well as the Abakaliki Ladies champion, Chy Ogban.
Enene Fonne, the Lady Captain commenting on the commencement of the event however said, “Today is my happiest day; the first Ladies Open Championship that for the past four months we have been discussing with LGAN has finally debuted.”
“I’m so elated about this event coming to reality; against this backdrop, I’m wishing the ladies a very happy game; all participants should enjoy themselves while the event lasts,” the Captain enthused.
