Thabo Bester’s court appearance
Thabo Bester returned to the Gauteng High Court on 24 March 2026, where he made fresh claims about alleged evidence he says he was prepared to present before Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee.
Following proceedings, Bester briefly addressed questions inside the court building, stating that his request to appear before the committee had been denied despite what he described as significant information he wanted to share.
“I have certain evidence about certain executives right now, and they don’t want me because they are scared that it will cause drama,” he claimed.
Bester, who represented himself in court, is currently seeking to be reclassified as a remand detainee.
His legal challenge forms part of a broader argument that his constitutional rights have been violated, particularly regarding the charge that he escaped from custody.
During the exchange, he also maintained that any claims about his escape must be proven in a court of law, reinforcing his stance that the case against him is not as clear-cut as it has been portrayed.
When asked about his time outside South Africa, specifically his presence in Tanzania before his arrest, Bester appeared dismissive, responding with a laugh and saying he had been “on holiday.”
His comments quickly made waves online, with social media users divided over his statements.
While some dismissed his claims as attention-seeking, others expressed curiosity about the alleged evidence he insists exists.

Bester’s case remains one of the most closely followed in recent years.
He previously made headlines after escaping from the Mangaung Correctional Centre in 2022 by faking his death, before being rearrested in 2023 in Tanzania alongside Nandipha Magudumana.
As the court reserves judgment on his latest application, the case continues to unfold, with both legal and public scrutiny showing no signs of slowing down.
