South African Afro-fusion artist Umzulu Phaqa has officially announced her upcoming solo debut album titled VOLUME 1, scheduled for release on 24 July 2026. The project marks her first full-length body of work presented strictly as a solo artist, following a series of singles, features, and collaborative releases that have shaped her career over the past few years.
Umzulu Phaqa is known for a sound that blends Afro-soul, Afropop, house, and hip-hop, while drawing heavily from isiZulu storytelling traditions. Her artistic identity has consistently focused on preserving cultural narratives within modern production, a style that has seen her work with several established South African musicians, including Sun-El Musician, Kwesta, Sjava, and Prince Kaybee, across different stages of her career.
Prior to this announcement, she had already built a growing catalogue of solo releases and collaborations. Her breakout single “Mam’gobhozi,” released in 2025, gained widespread attention and marked a turning point in her visibility within the industry. This was followed by additional singles such as “Nearly There,” “Tell Me You Want Me” featuring REMMIE, and “Thakatha Njalo” featuring DNA Ka Zulu, which was released in March 2026 as part of a steady rollout of new music leading into her debut album cycle.
She also contributed to the collaborative project And The Grammy Goes To, released in 2025 alongside MsFit, which further expanded her presence in the South African music scene. The project included tracks that highlighted her lyrical approach and genre-blending production style, reinforcing her position as an emerging voice in Afro-fusion.
In early 2026, Umzulu Phaqa was selected for Apple Music’s Up Next programme, an initiative designed to spotlight emerging talent with growing regional and international reach. The selection placed her among a group of artists identified for their cultural influence and evolving sound, while increasing anticipation around her upcoming projects.
The announcement of VOLUME 1 follows this period of consistent releases and growing industry recognition. The album title suggests the beginning of a structured series, with the artist positioning it as her first official solo debut album after years of collaborative work and single-driven releases.
Alongside the announcement, she confirmed the release date as 24 July 2026 and indicated that the project is now available for pre-save, signalling the start of the final rollout phase leading up to the album’s launch.
