Durban music collective Witness The Funk has officially announced its return, confirming the release of two new singles scheduled for the end of May and early June. The group, now operating as a duo following the departure of one of its founding members, shared the news through social media in a message directed to supporters who have followed their journey from the beginning.
Aux, one half of the current duo, posted a statement revealing the upcoming releases and thanking fans for their continued support over the years.
“It’s been a long time coming, guys. We’ve got something special for you,” the statement read.
The first single, titled “Mawungekho,” featuring uZondi, is scheduled for release on 29 May and is described as a record dedicated to lovers. The second release, “Veza,” featuring Blxckie and Votron, is set to arrive on 5 June and will lean into the group’s signature gqomtrap sound.
Witness The Funk first emerged from Durban’s alternative hip hop movement and became known for blending trap music with gqom, creating a sound that later became widely recognised as gqomtrap. The original lineup consisted of Aux Cable, Efelow and Moshine Magnif. The group was initially formed while the members were still students and later evolved into one of the most recognisable acts in South African youth culture during the mid-2010s.
The trio gained nationwide attention through breakout records such as “Wangnika” featuring Aewon Wolf before cementing their mainstream success with “Nomusa,” one of the songs that introduced many listeners to their hybrid sound. Their debut album, “Finding Nomusa,” expanded their reach and helped position the group among the rising acts in South African hip hop at the time.
Over the years, Witness The Funk collaborated with several established artists including Cassper Nyovest, DJ Tira, Okmalumkoolkat and K.O. Projects such as “Ngwenya Town EP” further showcased their ability to move between hip hop, electronic music and Durban dance sounds.
The group later experienced changes when founding member Moshine Magnif stepped away, resulting in Witness The Funk continuing as a duo. Reports over the years linked his departure to personal health struggles, while Aux Cable and Efelow continued pursuing music independently and under the Witness The Funk name.
With two new singles now confirmed, Witness The Funk’s return marks a new chapter for the Durban act that helped shape the gqomtrap movement in South Africa.
