Singer Zandie Khumalo, sister of Kelly Khumalo, has released her six-track EP, Ebantwini, on November 14, offering listeners an intimate glimpse into her family’s journey.
The project sees Zandie stepping into the role of co-producer alongside industry veterans Mojalefa “Mjakes” Thebe, Lindani Gumede, and her husband Mhlo Gumede, who guided her throughout the production process.
“I have been producing, but it is only now that I feel confident enough to own the title of co-producer,” Zandie shared.
“My husband, who is a music marvel, has been wonderful in helping to guide me.”
Married with a son, Zandie explained that she and her husband manage to maintain a clear boundary between work and family life.
A standout feature of the EP is a four-minute prayer from her mother, Ntombi Khumalo, which opens the album.
“My mom’s prayers have kept our family strong all these years. We usually start every family occasion with a prayer, and it made sense to allow her the honour to open my project with a prayer,” Zandie said.
“The prayer simply means blessings for my EP and the strong connection that my family has with God; basically, it’s a symbol of how I was raised.”
The EP is deeply personal, with each song inspired by Zandie’s life experiences.
One track, Emhlabeni, reflects her gratitude for God’s grace and the resilience her family has shown through years of challenges, including the ongoing trial surrounding the 2016 death of Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa, who was killed at the Khumalo family home while dating Kelly.
Blending Afro-pop with Maskandi, Mbaqanga, and gospel, Zandie’s sound has inevitably drawn comparisons to her sister, Kelly.
“Who would not want to be compared to such a music powerhouse? It’s an honour and a compliment,” she said.
